Why I Love Costa Rica Surfing

The beauty of Costa Rica surfing is that there are so many different breaks to choose from. Whether it’s the long rights at Ollie’s Point, the thumping waves at Hermosa, the big reef break at Playa Negra or the easy beach break at Tamarindo, Costa Rica surfing provides whatever type of wave you are looking for.

The best part of surfing in Costa Rica is that no matter what the tide is doing or the swell direction, within about a 30-45 minute drive, you can find a wave that’s breaking just right. Even their “bad days” are still fun. I grew up in North Florida where we were lucky to get 5 nice swells a year.

My favorite break is the most iconic of Costa Rica surfing, Witch’s Rock. The only way to really get there is to catch an hour or so boat ride out of Playa del Coco. The boat ride was filled with what can only be described as majestic. Do you remember the movie “Jurassic Park”? That’s how beautiful it was.

Once we made it to the break, you could see the spray from the waves just peeling down the beach and no one was there. Having these perfect waves with just our group was a dream come true for me. If you go surfing in Costa Rica and don’t make it to Witch’s Rock, you will miss out on one of the best breaks in Costa Rica.

I just want to say that Costa Rica was one of the best things that my wife and I had ever experienced. We’ve learn about the culture and the way people live. One of the best things we did was hooked up with a surf tour and met these native surfers that were so full of life and enjoyed every minute of every day. I’ve never met anyone so thankful for where they lived. The surf was so much fun. There was also a great break with small little waves that I could teach my wife how to surf. So if you get a chance to get away go to Tamarindo, Costa Rica and hook up with CRSURFADVENTURES.
